Catania Fontanarossa airport, in short

Catania Fontanarossa (IATA CTA, ICAO LICC), named after the composer Vincenzo Bellini, is the gateway to eastern Sicily and the busiest airport on the island. It is run by SAC — Società Aeroporto Catania S.p.A., which also operates Comiso. Passengers use two terminals: Terminal A for scheduled flights and Terminal C, which adds capacity in the busiest periods. They sit a few hundred metres apart and share the same landside area.

Getting there and leaving the car

The car parks are run directly by the airport operator and, unusually, all of them are within walking distance of the terminals — no shuttle is needed. For a drop-off, P1 and P3 give you 15 minutes free and then € 3.00 for the first hour; P3 is only 20 metres from Terminal A. For a holiday, the long-stay options are P4, the multi-storey low-cost one at € 10.00 a day, and P6 at € 12.00 a day, closer to the terminals. All of them are open 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

When Etna stops the flights

Catania is the only major Italian airport whose operations depend on a volcano. Etna's ash is abrasive rock dust that melts inside a jet engine and resolidifies on the turbine blades, so even a thin cloud is enough to reduce movements, force a single runway direction or suspend flights until the runway is swept. It happens several times a year, it is decided hour by hour, and it is never announced in advance.

Getting into town, and hiring a car

The Alibus city bus links the terminal to Catania Centrale station in 15 minutes for € 4.00, running from 04:40 to 00:30 with the same timetable on public holidays. The station named after the airport is a separate place, reached by a shuttle every 10 minutes. Four car hire companies have a desk inside the terminal — Hertz, Locauto-Enterprise, Noleggiare and Sixt — with published desk hours that do not cover the whole day.
